Nenjam ellam kaathal - from Ayutha Ezhuthu

hai yai yai.. or unmai sonnal..
(hey ! if I tell one truth)
nesipaaya??
(will you love me?)

Nenjam ellam kaathal
(My heart is full of love...)
Dhegam ellam kaamam
(My body is full of lust..)
Unmai sonnal ennai
(If I tell you one truth... )
nesipaaya?
(will you love me ??

Kaathal konjam kammi
(The proportion of love is a little less...)
Kaamam konjam thookal
(The proportion of lust is a bit more...)
Manjathin mel ennai
(on the bed...)
mannipaaya?
(will you forgive me?)

Unmai sonnaal nesipaaya...
(if i tell you the truth.. will you love me...?)
manjathin mel mannipaaya...
(Will you forgive me on the bed?)

The female is telling the male.. that even though she loves him, she is lusting for him more at this moment. She is turned on ... and knows that she will be wild on the bed... and she asks her lover whether he will forgive her for her wildness/crazy lust needs..

(Male stanza)
Pengal mele maiyal undu...
(I have always been attracted to women)
Naan pitham kondathu unnil mattum...
(You were the only one I have gone crazy for)
Nee otha parvai parkum pothu..
(When you give me that single look)
En muthugu thandil minnal vettum...
(I feel lightning striking on my spinal chord)

Nee thaane mazhai megam enakku...
(For me you are like the clouds that give rain..)
En hormone nathiyil vella thadukku..
(My hormone rivers are flooding)
Paasaangu.. ini namakketharku?
(Why should we act as though nothing is happening??)
yaar ketka? namakku naame vazhvatharku!
(Whom should we ask for living for ourselves!)

Unmai sonnal nesipaaya..
Manjathin mel mannipaaya??

(Female stanza)
Kaathal ennai varudum pothum...
(When love softly touches me...)
Un kaamam ennai thirudum pothum...
(When your lust steals me...)
En manasellam maargazhi thaan...
(My heart is cool like the month of margazhi)
En iravellam karthigai thaan...
(My nights are like the month of karthigai)

Margazhi is the tamil month from Dec 15 to Jan 15.. this is the coolest month of Tamil Nadu.. She compares her heart (the usual symbol of love/purity) to the chill weather experienced in the month of Margazhi. She personifies her genuine love for him like the cool breeze, and misty mornings of Margazhi
Karthigai is the tamil month from Nov. 15 to Dec 15 (correct me if I am wrong)... Its usually the rainy season... she compares her nights to the wetness/heavy rains experienced in the month of Karthigai. By this she expresses her wish to have wet nights, filled with intense sexual passion, as strong as the rains..

En vaanam en vasathil undu...
(My skies are under my control)
En boomi en vasathil illai...
(My earth is not under my control)

These two lines signify her excited state. She feels that she has got the sky under her control.. meaning the intense level of sexual excitement in her... but the ground is not under her control meaning, she is flying high.. This also signifies a sense of imagination, unreal situation.. because in reality we are all grounded, and reaching the sky is impossible in reality.

Un kuraigal naan ariyavillai...
(I don't know your faults)
Naan arinthaal sooriyanil sutham illai...
(If I knew them, then the sun is not clean)

These two lines tell us that the woman's sexual passion is much higher than that of a man. She says she does not know his shortcomings in love making... actually in this context it sounds like she does not want to know his shortcomings, possibly because she does not want to spoil her mood. And she adds, if she does get to know... then the sun is not clean enough, i.e. if the woman starts evaluating the man's performance in love making, then she would draw so many faults comparing to saying the sun is not clean. Imagine the enormity of her sexual satisfaction level...!

This is my interpretation. Please let me know if I am wrong! I am open to learning more Thamizh.. and the beauty of this poetic language.

Manasellam margazhi thaan...
Iravellam karthigai thaan....

  10. Best Explanation:
    En vaanam en vasathil undu...
(My skies are under my control)
    En boomi en vasathil illai...
(My earth is not under my control)
The interpretation of these two lines MIGHT BE, she was referring her feelings as sky, and her body as earth. Means in bed, her feelings are under her limits that she can control, but she cannot control her body which is beyond limits

    1. because she didn't say, vaanam and boomi in general to assume your theory. She said, "En vaanam" and "En boomi" which could possibly mean her sky state, her feelings and her earth which means her body

    2. In general, the sky is a masculine symbol and the earth is a feminine symbol. If you keep this in mind when reading the lines your understanding will be like this: the girl takes complete control over her man and she could not control her physical urges.
